New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata
In conjunction with the exhibition Edith and George: In Our Sea of Islands at the New Zealand Portrait Gallery, join Auckland-based photographer Haruhiko Sameshima who presents an illustrated talk exploring Edith Amituanai’s place within documentary and studio photographic traditions in New Zealand.

Nicolás Paris workshop

Nicolás Paris is a Colombian artist whose work investigates education and pedagogy. As a core aspect of his practice, Paris initiates workshops based on drawing exercises and peer-to-peer dialogue. For this workshop, Paris seeks to initiate open and experimental learning processes in order to exchange knowledge and find new ways of working collectively. The workshop is organised in partnership with the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and is supported by Creative New Zealand and LatAm CAPE, Latin America Centre for Asia-Pacific Excellence.

Join Double Take curator Ane Tonga and Nick Netzler, a photographer and specialist in colonial photography of the Pacific, for a discussion prompted by Edith Amituanai’s exhibition. Their conversation is chaired by Sean Mallon, Senior Curator Pacific Cultures at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

Join artist Edith Amituanai and David Cook, Senior Lecturer in photography at the College of Creative Arts, Massey University, for a discussion about the subjects and approaches they take in their documentary practices.

Join Associate Professor Peter Brunt, a specialist in Pacific art in the Art History Programme at Victoria University of Wellington, and previous student and researcher Hanahiva Rose, who is currently an advisor to the Ministry for Culture and Heritage and an independent art writer, for a conversation about what kind of Pacific Edith Amituanai is picturing now. Their conversation is chaired by Rachel Yates, a graduate of Pacific Studies at Victoria University of Wellington, who wrote her PhD on the Pacific diaspora, focusing on communities in South Korea.

Join us on the last Friday of Edith Amituanai: Double Take to hear responses to the exhibition from writer and curator, Professor Heather Galbraith, in conversation with leading photographer, Distinguished Professor Anne Noble, who are colleagues at Massey University’s College of Creative Arts in Wellington. Their conversation is chaired by Senior Lecturer in Pacific Studies, Emalani Case.

As a special closing event, please join us for an evening of dance, music and talks organised by Litara Allan, a student in the Pacific Studies programme at Victoria University Wellington. We also launch Edith Amituanai: Double Take, the publication edited by Christina Barton and featuring contributions by Ane Tonga, Haruhiku Sameshima, Christina Barton, Anna Miles and Niko Besnier.
