Marianne Wex in Wellington: roundtable discussion
Marianne Wex lived in Wellington from 1983 and 1986, making contact with local feminists and sharing her project, Let’s Take Back Our Space with them. Please join us for an open mike conversation led by Christina Barton, with invited guests who met Wex at that time and were involved in the feminist foment of the era.

For the penultimate seminar in the 2016 Art History in Practice series, Kirsty Baker discusses her research into the Wellington Women’s Gallery. Her talk seeks to contextualise the activities of this artist-led initiative and discusses writing this feminist art history for her MA thesis.

Please join us as current Honours students Lachlan Taylor and Eleanor Lee-Duncan discuss their art historical research. Taylor will elaborate on his approach to researching the work of Martha Rosler, while Lee-Duncan’s presentation titled Body of Work: Representations of Gender draws on her study of photographer Rebecca Swan. This final Art History in Practice seminar for 2016 will be followed by light refreshments.

To begin the series we are joined by Jan Smitheram, Senior Lecturer in the School of Architecture, who discusses Le Corbusier’s unpermitted act of painting a suite of murals onto fellow modernist architect Eileen Gray’s building E.1027.

Hear visiting Auckland art writer and critic Anthony Byrt as he discusses his current research into the British-writer Ann Quin with Christina Barton. Despite completing four novels before her untimely death in 1973, Quin remains a largely overlooked literary figure. Byrt and Barton will attempt to fill a number of gaps within her story, including her a brief relationship with New Zealand conceptual artist Billy Apple in the early 1960s.
